Paddock Paradise
Natural housing, natural movement
Every horse owner wants the best for their animal. But what 'the best' is depends on what is possible. Some people have their own pasture, others keep their horse at a boarding stable or riding school. The influence you have on housing differs, but your involvement does not. And whether you can think along on a small or large scale: every step towards a more natural life counts.
A Paddock Paradise is a housing method that stimulates movement and natural behavior. It's not an all-or-nothing story, but a vision that you can translate in your own way, big or small, now or in the future.
Natural movement, natural management
The concept of Paddock Paradise is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. The idea: you create a path (track) around your pasture, without a beginning or an end. Horses live on this path and are encouraged to keep moving. Along the path, you offer water, hay, herbs, shrubs, trees, minerals, and other natural stimuli.
The result? More movement, more calm in the herd, and more well-being, without it having to be complicated or expensive.

More than just a pathway
The basis for the Paddock Paradise comes from farrier Jamie Jackson, who observed wild horses in their natural environment. In the wild, horses cover many kilometers daily, over varying terrains. In a Paddock Paradise, you simulate those conditions with what you have.
This can be achieved with simple things: a narrow path, some shrubs or hedges, a sand corner, a small hill, or some tree trunks. Even in limited space, you can start with small adjustments.
Give your soil a break
Many horses on little land often lead to overload and soil compaction. By using a track system, you can allow the rest of your plot to recover. Grass gets a chance to grow again, herbs return, and soil life restarts. This requires a bit more hay initially but pays off in healthier pastures, fewer supplements, and a more natural diet for your horse.
Horses in balance
For horses, a track system is often a huge enrichment. Especially for animals with overweight or metabolic problems. The extensive walking keeps digestion, circulation, and organs active. Stress is reduced, social behavior improves, and you see your horse literally flourishing.
No land of your own? Small steps work too
Not everyone has the opportunity to build a Paddock Paradise themselves, and that's perfectly okay. Even at a boarding stable, you can think about more natural stimuli: hay in multiple places, exercise outside the stable, a sand paddock with herb corners, or a mineral buffet.
And if you have plans to start something of your own someday: get inspired. Maybe you can already plant the seeds for what will flourish later.

Creative with what is possible
A Paddock Paradise is not a fixed formula. It adapts to your location, budget, and soil type. Consider:
- A narrow path with hay racks in multiple places
- Elevation changes, tree trunks, or herb gardens along the path
- Water crossings, sandy areas, or natural shelters
- Rotational grazing areas or herb strips in the middle
The more natural you make it, the better it works, for your horse and the soil.
The soil cooperates
What you see above ground also happens below ground. Every blade of grass that is allowed to grow results in deeper roots and more nourishment for soil life. By mowing or limiting grazing, you build a resilient soil.
Compost, lava flour, clay minerals or effective microorganisms can provide extra support for this process. And most importantly: give it time. Because just like your horse, the soil also needs space and rest to recover.
Animals choose for themselves
Along the edge of the track, you can consciously vary minerals or herbs. Think of a mineral buffet with Icelandic seaweed, Mother Earth, and peat extract, or let plants with different properties grow. Horses instinctively feel what they need and choose what suits their needs.
This way, you observe what works without analysis and give your horse the freedom to self-regulate.
In summary: why a Paddock Paradise?
- More movement, less stress
- Natural eating and social behavior
- Healthier grass through rest and rotation
- Less soil overburden
- More biodiversity in flora, fauna, and soil life
- More enjoyment for both humans and animals
A Paddock Paradise is not a hype. It is a logical continuation of a way of keeping horses that considers the whole: animal, soil, environment, and human. And what you cannot apply today, you might be able to tomorrow. Every step is a step in the right direction.
Or as a customer once said:
“Since we followed the path, the horses are moving forward.”
